Smog City Brewing
Following the disastrous Ramen Yokocho Festival and a quick bowl at Umenoya Ramen, we headed over to Smog City Brewing Company for beer. Torrance is rapidly becoming a haven for craft beer breweries. Smog City Brewing’s unassuming taproom is located in a nondescript industrial park.
We studied the list and were originally going to get 6 tasters but the cute tray persuaded us to take on one more. The trays are merely a subliminal suggestion. You can order as little or as many as you want.
From left to right:
Third Nipple Tripel – funny name, good beer
Sabre Tooth Squirrel – Hoppy Amber that was unobtrusive. I think this would be a great beer to have with food.
Smog City XPA – This black IPA wasn’t quite what I wanted. I had tried the black IPA from Firestone Walker recently and liked theirs a bit more.
Hive Five – This honey amber was the first one we finished. I really enjoyed it.
Weird beer – Saison with spices was how the Weird beer was described to us. I thought it tasted like a beer cocktail with lots of cardamon. But coming from the cocktail world, I liked it. I’m not sure craft heads would like this one as much.
Hoptonic IPA - I normally drink dark beers like porters and stouts. I’m coming around to hoppy beers. Hoptonic struck a balance for me so it didn’t taste like just grass water to me.

Smog City taproom
While we were there, a bus load of beer drinkers came in. That is probably a good idea if you’re visiting more than one brewery. We thought about going to Monkish next but opted to head over to the beach.
