Whittier: Ceviche and Cocktails at Bizarra Capital

There are apparently limited drinking options in the Quakers-founded town of Whittier which is located approximately 25 miles outside of Los Angeles. My friend suggested we go to Bizarra Capital, owned by the same group that has Guisados and Dorados. It was a lazy late Sunday afternoon but there were still a few tables enjoying drinks. The bar is more like a service bar so you can’t gather around it.

I was looking for original cocktails so I skipped the margaritas, daiquiris and caipirinhas though I wondered if I should have tried them. Instead, I ordered the Whiskey Pedro and Canario Pinto. My friend asked for them to be on ice. Which was of course a bit amusing when the Canario Pinto was served in a cocktail glass with ice.

I could see why my friend wanted the Whiskey Pedro on the rocks. It sounded like it could be too sweet but it was actually very nice. The limoncello was a bit of a surprise and the garnish was beautiful.

You could order the ceviches as an individual portion or this enormous platter. We went with the enormous platter of mixed ceviche, obviously. And then proceeded to stuff ourselves silly with fish, octopus, shrimp, clams and crab. The tomatoes were summer-ripe and my only wish would be for more avocado.

As mentioned, my cocktail was served with ice in a cocktail glass. I probably would have changed it to a rocks glass like the Whiskey Pedro was served in since it was a bit funny. The lemon juice was a good counterpoint to the honey rum, reminding me of a rum Gold Rush.

If I’m in that part of town again, I’ll definitely order some tacos and probably get a daiquiri. Bizarra Capital also has a short list of tequilas and some mezcal. $9 for Don Julio anejo is very reasonable. They also serve craft beer. Allagash, Lost Coast, Hitachino, Golden Road and more jumped out at me.

Check them out for Taco Tuesdays.
