ChocoChicken opens today! The eagerly-anticipated chocolate fried chicken joint in Downtown Los Angeles is serving up not just fried chicken dusted in chocolate but chocolate mashed potatoes, biscuits and if pictures from their Facebook page are any indication, chocolate mac and cheese is coming our way soon.
First things first- the chicken is not actually in your face chocolate. Nor is there a mole sauce like some thought. It is a darker brown from the ground chocolate but otherwise the taste is very subtle. I found myself dipping the chicken into the bee sting sauce; a local honey infused with Gindo’s spice of life hot sauce.
And the chocolate mashed potatoes were also surprisingly subtle. The potatoes have been whipped with white chocolate.
If you want veggies, there’s a cup of raw crudite dusted with Choco spice which went well with the miso ranch. But really, just get more chicken.
ChocoChicken will have a full bar. I found that pretty interesting since they’re in the old Corkbar space which was a California wines-only wine bar. There will be chocolate martinis, craft beer and classic cocktails. I tried out the Flying 58, a refreshing gin and grapefruit drink perfect for the patio.

The duck fat fries are sprinkled with Choco seasoning. While the chocolate ketchup (yes, chocolate ketchup!) went with the fries, I ended up dipping the fries in the miso ranch.
Here’s some more ChocoChicken fried chicken p0rn for ya.
Desserts are from Cake Monkey. We tried the Chocolate S’mores which is a whoopie pie. If you love chocolate, then this is the place to go! But then you’ll come back for the moist, crispy chicken.
